Smartphone prices will drop in Brazil

With the aim of making smartphones (which have internet connectivity among their functions) more accessible to lower-income groups, the Government approved a decree today that reduces the PIS and COFINS rates on these devices to zero. This measure will bring consumers a price reduction of up to 30% compared with imported devices, and only devices costing less than R$ 1,500.00 and manufactured in Brazil will qualify for the measure.

The price drop is expected next week, since an ordinance with the specifications of the mobile devices that will qualify for this measure still needs to be published.

Removing other drivers and installing the recent NVIDIA driver version

Hello folks, as many nvidia graphics card users may have noticed, Compiz graphics performance and OpenGL playback are very slow in this new version of Ubuntu. To explain quickly, this is due to two factors:

Ubuntu 10.04 comes with a generic driver called Nouveau, so even if you install the nvidia driver provided by canonical, Nouveau will keep running.
The nvidia driver provided by canonical is very outdated compared to the one provided by nvidia.

So before anything else, we need to remove all video drivers installed on Ubuntu, until all of them are removed, when you try to install the recent nvidia driver, you’ll encounter the following problem:
